Hello Farm Cart Family!

It’s September 29th and we are nearing the election, our new normal is not that normal, and I’m sure you all are feeling as anxious as I am.  There is a palpable buzz in the air, and I know we are all feeling a bit off.

If you not feeling off, frustrated and scared, skip this paragraph:

Since you are off like me, let me show you what I do for my sanity..

I find some time to get outside in the mornings or in the late evenings, to deeply breath without a mask the refreshed fall air, and take a moment to find empathy, love and calm.

This is the contemplation I was taught:

”May all beings be free from danger, may all beings be free from mental pain, may all beings be free from physical pain, and may all beings be well and happy.”

I say this in my mind and say thank you that I get to be here, and then I move back into my life. And if that doesn’t help you find love for who and what you feel opposed to, then jump down this rabbit hole with your loved one on Netflix and see how the Algorithms on our social medias have polarized us from one another — The Social Dilemma | Netflix Official Site

This documentary-drama hybrid explores the dangerous human impact of social networking, with tech experts sounding the alarm on their own creations. It’s a great watch.

With that quick intermission for collective love, sanity, and empathy over, lets get back to nature and what is happening in the dirt and on the farms. Summer is officially over, fall is here, and the rains are, we pray… on their way. I can almost smell them. It is an exciting time to be a farmer, as we transition our fields out of summer crops and into winter. We are blessed to farm year round here in our corner of California.  And fall is as exciting as spring here, only different in daylight and growing speed.

With that said, make sure you enjoy the end of this season. The final melons, corn, tomatoes, and peppers are leaving us quickly.  Now is the time to make sure you really enjoy each and every bite of those deep succulent heirlooms on your bruschetta. Just like our luscious watermelons and sweet corns, their season has almost come to an end.  Don’t panic too much, they are not officially over yet, we have a month or so left before the first frost truly ends our summer delicacies.

As sad as it is to see these delicacies ending, there is a silver lining. As there always is. Transition in season is tough, on the farm we work extra hard to clean up the old and plant the new, but there is always something awesome ahead of us, and this time of year what I get super excited about, is the insanely sweet cold winter night sugar carrot. Sure, the kale gets sweet, the broccoli is abundant, and I am pumped on flash frying brussels sprouts, but nothing quite excites me like straight out of the dirt cold weather carrots.

The cold nights and ample rains, make the carrots so much sweeter it is hard to believe. If you’ve been with us through a winter season, you know what a February carrot tastes like.. they are special.

So, have faith. Good things are coming in your farm box, and good things are possible for humanity.  As long as we work hard to love and support one another and keep heading joyfully towards that February carrot, everything will work out just fine.

Love you guys,

Jason
