Hello everyone,

Happy Mid-April. The sun is out, the plants are growing and thriving, and the season of abundance is coming upon us. I know I’ve asked this question before, but I think it is an important one and one that will drive us deeper into the work that we are both doing here. The question is a big one: Why are we here?

Not, why are we here, like why are we here on Earth. What is my purpose? Is there a God? Not in that sense, but kind of. More like why are we here at Farm Cart? What motivated us to be here? What brought us together, and where are we trying to go? And what are we looking for in this relationship?

The reason I ask this of you, and of myself, is because I’m personally coming into a point of self-reflection and a point of priority adjustment. I know I am still relatively young, 42, but I am presently surrounded by both of my father figures being treated for cancer. And this is shining a bright light into my choices, my habits, and the outcomes that I hope for for myself.

Without getting into too much detail, my father was exposed to Agent Organge ( a precursor defoliant to Glyphosate) during Vietnam and consequently developed Multiple Myeloma. He is 4 years into his treatment and I have been his advocate for his journey. My father was not a huge surprise, sadly. His life choices were more apparent. On the other side of the coin, is Katherine’s father, who was a huge surprise. Currently, he is in the middle of chemotherapy to treat bladder cancer, and is expected to have his bladder removed towards the beginning of winter. It appears as though his cancer is related to his long term exposure to diesel fumes, from his small tractor. It is sad.

Ok, so what does that have to do with everything bright and sunny and beautiful that is the produce that comes from our farmers. I guess that’s where it goes back to the question I asked above.

Why are you here? Are you here for the romance of organic farming? Or are you here for your health.

Because, I am realizing, that I am here more and more for my health, and for the health of my family.

And the more that I am learning about the relationship between farming practices and food quality.

The more I am realizing that I am where I need to be to support the health of everyone I care about.

With all of that said, next week, I’m going to send out a questionnaire to all of you to find out where your health concerns are at, so I can start bringing expertise back to you in the places that you are concerned about.

Thank you all for the love and support,

Jason
